When a patient has a heel spur, they have a bony growth on the bottom of their heel. Plantar fasciitis, also referred to as heel pain, is an extremely common problem of athletes. It is generally not caused by a specific injury, but by repeated pressure on the foot. Since athletes commonly run and jump a lot, they are very prone to developing plantar fasciitis which can include heel spurs. When a patient comes to see our podiatrist with heel pain they may have plantar fasciitis as well as a
heel spur in Brick. It may be that a good solution to help your foot pain would be for our doctor to prescribe shoe inserts for you to help alleviate the pain. A heel spur is actually a calcium deposit that has created a bony protrusion on the bottom of the heel bone. It is generally easy to detect as it can be seen on an x-ray. If the heel spur cannot be seen on an x-ray, the condition may be referred to as heel spur syndrome. A heel spur is commonly associated with plantar fasciitis, which is an inflammation of the connective tissues that run along the bottom of the foot and connect the heel bone and the ball of the foot. There are many different treatments for heel spurs in addition to custom orthotics. Treatments can include exercise, anti-inflammatory medications, and cortisone injections. When these treatments are not effective, our foot surgeon may need to provide our patient with foot surgery to stop the heel spur pain problem.
